Tributes

This page features tributes to dogs we have worked with who are no longer with us. Sadly there are those occasions when a dog loses its life due to a pre-existing condition, illness or accident, and this is our way of remembering them.

In your heart, you probably realise that in time the sadness you are feeling will fade.
For now, just know that it's all right to hurt...
I hurt with you.
It's all right to cry...
I share your tears.
It is only through crying that you learn what it's really like to laugh...
Only after feeling sadness can you really experience joy.
So allow yourself to feel what comes natural...
But know that someday life will be better...
It will be easier to smile.

-Renee Duvall

Arthur

Arthur was an elderly gent who won many hearts despite being in rescue only briefly.

You can read his story by clicking here.

Cindy

Cindy arrived at the pound in March 2006 via the RSPCA with her puppies.

You can read her story by clicking here.

Tyson

Tyson came to the pound in April 2006 with his son Monty, and moved to rescue where he was much loved before his death.

Tia

Tia was moved from the pound to Warrington Animal Welfare in February 2006. She was a beautiful, if rather overweight Rottie girl, with a wonderful temperament and a love of people.

Tia very quickly drew attention from people who met her. She would lean against their legs as if to say "well, give me hugs then" or she’d roll on her back and wait for belly rubs. She had the softest nature and was a firm favourite with everyone at the WAW kennels. During her time in rescue Tia proved herself to be very good with children, especially at washing their faces. She was a little dominant with other dogs, but did enjoy their company. Unbelievably though, by the end of March Tia was still waiting for her forever home.

On 30th March we learned that Tia was not well. Her eyes were sore and weepy, and despite drops were not improving. It was then noticed that her forehead was swollen. Tia was taken back to the vet for further investigations, where it was discovered that Tia had a brain tumour, and the decision was made to let her go. She was put to sleep on Thursday 30th March 2006 being cuddled by WAW’s Chairperson. Although Tia never found her forever home, she was adored in the kennels by staff and volunteers alike. There cannot be a more fitting tribute than these words from one of WAW’s dedicated volunteers:

Despite being in considerable pain and confusion…"Tia has continued to show her true colours - a gentle, loving, patient girlie - the sweetest nature, the most cuddly, worthy, fat-bottom girl ever to grace the planet...
Tia was a lovely girl, very special to all of us. She was a gentle, sweet natured girl. Everyone who met Tia fell in love with her. She loved everyone, and was great with children. She was a big fat lazy girl who wanted nothing more than cuddles and cream cakes from life.
Sadly, Tia never found her forever home, but she has found a loving forever home in the hearts of all of us who met her."

Dudley

Dudley found himself in the pound in May 2006. Many people assumed that as an elderly, overweight, disabled dog, this would sadly be the end of the line for this boy.
Dudley however didn't think so and the vet agreed with him, and despite his disabilities, his spark for life kept him going and he was found a place at Tailends in Devon.

Tailends gave Dudley the retirement he deserved with gentle walks and interesting things to sniff and friends to play with for almost a year.

On April 2nd 2007 it became clear that Dudley was ready to go, and he was put to sleep having known love and happiness.

You can read more details about Dudley on his own page by clicking on his picture.

Twiggy

Twiggy arrived at the pound in August 2006 starving, painfully thin and bewildered. The immediate concern was for her welfare, and she was carefully monitored by the girls at the kennels having been checked for any signs of mange, fleas or other immediate problems. In the first few days Twiggy was too weak even to leave her bed to open her bowels, and her kennel had to be regularly cleaned, and bedding changed.

As her 7 days neared an end, the decision was made that Twiggy was too frail at this stage to move to rescue, and needed to be in a fostering situation. Lindsey, our most experienced foster carer offered her a foster home, and arrangements were made to move Twiggy there, to allow her time to build her strength and to be fully assessed.

It was soon discovered that Twiggy would never be well enough to be rehomed, and would remain a lifetime foster dog with Lindsey and her family where her comfort, happiness and security was ensured until such time that a decision had to be made to let her go.

Twiggy passed away on the morning of 16th May 2007. She died peacefully at home, having had the most loved and cared for 9 months a dog could wish for.

You can read more details about Twiggy's amazing journey on her own page by clicking on her picture.

Smithers

Smithers arrived at the pound in April 2007. A little old gentleman of over 11 years of age, with short stumpy legs, grey hair and a bewildered expression he won hearts immediately.

We were incredibly fortunate to be offered a space for Smithers at Tailends, and despite the long journey to Devon he travelled well. Smithers' confusion however was obvious and a trip to the vet for a health check discovered some upsetting news. The quote below comes from Angela at Tailends and is reproduced with her permission:

Smithers..."was examined by my vet yesterday and found to have a very serious heart complaint. His teeth are in a very poor condition and he has a tumour near the base of his tail, which is not of immediate concern in view of his other problems. Smithers has been circling to the left and also I have observed him pressing his head into the wall. These are indications that he has brain damage. Poor little Smithers has been so unlucky to have so many problems - just when we are there to help him. He is deaf and has cataracts on both eyes though does have some sight. He has been enjoying his meals and going for long rambles around the garden followed by deep sleeps in his cosy bed. There is little treatment we can give to this poor boy except to ensure that he is loved and cared for during his final days. We will take it a day at a time. He would probably not survive an anaesthetic to deal with his teeth and remove the tumour, but he is not in pain and seems bright and cheerful. He may only have a short time here but will be cared for until the time comes for him to leave."

Smithers remained in the care of Tailends until 18th May 2007 when he was helped on his way. You can read about Smithers on the Tailends website by clicking on his photo.

Sasha

German Shepherd, female, a little over 8 years old. She was signed over to the pound by her owners due to a seperation, but they reported that she had become extremely thin since their other dog died as she had been pining.

A rescue space was found for her, and arrangements were made for her transport.

Sasha's kind volunteer driver Bernadette collected her from the pound as planned but was concerned as she was struggling to walk on her back legs. She was a gem in the car, beautifully behaved but very quiet and sad looking. Stopping for the required health check at the vet's on route Sasha's driver was informed that Sasha had a massive tumour that was inoperable. After discussion between RDR and the receiving rescue the decision was made to leave Sasha with the vet, where she was helped peacefully on her way.

He was taken to the 'pound' by the dog warden and whilst serving his 7 days he was very, very vocal and wouldn't calm down. After his seven days he was taken to our vets for neutering and for his 1st vaccination but due to his behaviour, his breed and the fact that it would have been virtually impossible to have secured him a rescue space, sadly a decision was made to let him go peacefully whilst sedated. The staff took him down to the paddock and he had a really good time before he went and he passed with dignity and peace. RIP Spot...gone but not forgotten. You captured our hearts. Despite this she was a very gentle, steady and friendly girl who won the hearts of those that met her. She was kindly offered a space by the Blue Cross after her 7 days, where she enjoyed lots of fuss, treats and company. Sadly before Kim was able to find her forever home, it was discovered her medical conditions were more severe than initially thought and with much sadness the decision was made to let her go. Once at rescue he enjoyed lots of treats, attention and a big cosy bed to sleep in. Unfortunately Blue's health began to deterioriate and before he was able to find his forever home, the decision was made with much thought and sadness to let him go. Our sincere thanks go to the Blue Cross who took Blue in and cared for him and many thanks also to the transporters who gave up their time to help Blue get to safety.

Whitney Died November 2008
Whitney was a lovely Neopolitan Mastiff girl. She arrived at the pound in a poor condition, very skinny and had obviously been used for breeding. In spite of what she had been through Whitney remained a loving and gentle girl who still had a love and affection for people. She was kindly offered a space by the breed rescue after her 7 days. Whitney made her way to rescue where she was able to receive lots of love and TLC. Once at rescue it was discovered that Whitney had a tumour that needed a big operation to remove. Whitney seemed to recover well after the op but shortly after she went downhill - it is believed that Whitney's heart could not cope and she passed away. It is thought poor Whitney's tumour had been there quite a while. Our sincere thanks go to the rescue who took Whitney in and cared for her and many thanks also to the transporters who gave up their time to help Whitney get to safety.

Our sincere thanks go to the Blue Cross who took Sophie in and cared for her and many thanks also to the transporters who gave up their time to help Sophie.

Ian was a handsome Rottweiler Male. Whilst serving his 7 days at the pound he had shown signs of a distrust of people and some stress when he was around them. It was apparent that poor Ian had not had a happy life up to now and something in his past had caused him not to trust people any more. It was hoped that once Ian was moved to our Emergency Boarding further assessments and work could be done with him to help him realise people are OK.... However whist en route at the vets, Ians behaviour started to deteriorate when in close proximity to people and he started to show some severe aggression. The tough decision was made to let Ian go as it appears he was a troubled lad and his demons were just too much for him to cope with. Ian can now be at peace... A big thank you to everyone who tried their best for Ian and the support recieved afterwards by everyone who cared for Ian and followed his story.

Murray Died December 2008
Murray was a young Collie Cross. After serving his 7 days at the pound he was very kindly offered a place. He made his way safely to rescue and turned out to be a special dog, with all the transporters wanting to take him home and the rescue seeing his potential. Murray was soon ready to be put up for rehoming. It was during this time that Murrays health took a down turn and he became lethargic and lost his appetite. Shortly after he had a nosebleed and was rushed to the vets for treatment and a drip but despite the vets best efforts, poor Murray never recovered.
Our sincere thanks go to Rotherham Dog Rescue who took special boy Murray in and cared for him and many thanks also to the transporters who gave up their time to help Murray.

MERRY Died January 2009
Merry was an adorable little Staffie girl who came into the pound. After serving her 7 days at the pound she moved to our emergency boarding kennels where she won over many of the volunteers who got to know her. Merry was then kindly offered a space at rescue. Merry made her way to rescue where she soon settled in. It was around that time that Merry began to show signs of reactiveness towards other dogs which unfortunately became worse over time despite the work that was done to help her overcome her issues. Unfortunately Merrys behaviour became so bad around other dogs the sad decision was made to let her go as she had become unpredictable. We will never know what happened in her past to cause poor Merry to have such issues, but our sincere thanks go to JG's who took Merry in and tried to help her overcome her fears. We would also like to thank all transporters and volunters who gave up their time to help Merry.

YOGI Died January 2009

Yogi was a handsome German Shepherd lad who came into the pound. After spending a short time at emergency boarding he was lucky enough to get offered a rescue place. Yogi made his way to rescue and initially appeared to settle in. However it appeared that Yogi was becoming stressed in the kennel environment and this was starting to manifest itself as mild aggression towards people even with the work the rescue staff were undertaking with him. It was felt perhaps a change of scenery may do Yogi good but his aggressive behaviour continued to escalate and the sad decision was made to let Yogi go as he seemed unable to over come his issues. We will never know what happened to Yogi in his past to make him unhappy or whether he had any illness that affected his behaviour. The staff at Emergency boarding and Leicester and Dunstable tried their best for this lad and our thanks go to them for showing him love, understanding and kindness in his time with them.

KIMMY Died January 2009

Kimmy was a gorgeous Rottweiler girl who came into the pound with a skin condition. Kimmy started to recieve treatment for this and this continued on when Kimmy was offered a rescue space. Kimmy however was very unhappy with being treated and restrained to recieve her treatment. The rescue worked patiently with Kimmy to try to help her see that vets and handling were not a problem. Sadly Kimmy made little progress to overcome her fears and reactions in such sitations and it was felt that she would not be able to find a home with her issues. Sadly the decision was made to let her go to a place with no more vets and examinations. We thank everyone who gave some time to help Kimmy. Sleep tight.

SHADRACK Died January 2009

Shadrack was a handsome akita lad. He spent some time at emergency boarding before making his way to rescue, everyone who met him loved him. At rescue it was discovered that Shadrack was not keen on men and did not settle well into kennel life. In his time there no-one came forward to offer poor Shadrack a home. He had been there quite a while and when his health was starting to fail and it was felt by the rescue that he was not happy and the decision was made to let him go.
Our thanks go to everyone who helped Shadrack and we are truly sorry you did not get that forever home you deserved. For Shadracks's thread on our forum please click here.

AXEL Died February 2009

Axel was a big gentle laid back dog and no one could understand why he ended up at the pound as he was so lovable and well behaved. Axel moved to rescue and after a little wait found a new home. However, after suffering seizures at his new home he went back to the rescue for further observations and treatments. Axel recieved the treatment he needed and it was believed his medication had stablilised his condition and he was ready to be homed again. Axel was lucky enough to find a new home to give him the love he deserved. Sadly after only six weeks with his new family Axel suffered 8 fits one after the other and the vets were not able to bring him round after the last. Our condolences go to Axels new family who lost their much loved boy after such a short time of knowing him, and our thanks go to the rescue and vets who looked after and treated him during his illness.

TIA Died March 2009

Tia was a staffie cross girl who found her way to the pound having been left tied to a lamp post all night. After moving to Emergency Boarding, she spent a lovely first weekend walking with the volunteers and her new doggy friend Roxy, enjoying some fresh air, fun and exercise. Tia went in for her routine spay, but started to encounter problems whilst at the vets with bleeding. The vets gave her an emergency transfusion but sadly Tia did not pull through - it was possible she had a blood clotting illness. Our thanks go to the vets who did their best for her, and to the walkers, transporters and Emergency Boarding kennels who looked after Tia for her time with us. She will be missed and we are glad she had such a lovely weekend before.

RUDY Died May 2009
Rudy was a Boxer cross lad who found his way to the pound in a poor condition. After serving his 7 days he made his way to emergency boarding where he could start to be fed up and loved. He became a favourite of many of our volunteer walkers and everyone was thrilled when his chance came for a rescue place. Rudy soon worked his charm on everyone at his new rescue too and spent lots of time meeting new people, continuing work on his socialisation and having lots of nice walks, food and love. Unfortunately during this time it became apparent that Rudy had some behavioural issues which would mean staying a little longer at rescue before going up for rehoming. Sadly despite all the care and patience he was given he was becoming more unreliable and the sad decision was made to let him go. Our thanks go to the rescue who spent alot of time contining to try to help Rudy and who are, as are all who met him, devastated by this. Run free Rudy.

STAVROS Died July 2009
Stavros was an American Bulldog type lad who after serving his 7 days at the pound, made his way to rescue. He was a big lovable softy, only a youngster. It was known he had a few minor health issues such as sores on his paws and elbows and an enlarged scrotum. The rescue gave Stavros the treatment he needed and time to recuperate from these issues before looking for his home. During this time it sadly became apparant that poor Stavros had more serious underlying joint and spine issues and would have been in alot of pain. With much sadness the decision was made to set Stavros free from his constant pain and suffering - a decision which caused much sadness to everyone at the rescue, where everyone had a soft spot for him. A big thank you to those who helped get him to safety, and the rescue who loved him, cared for him and tried their best for him.

JODY Died July 2009
Jody was a cross breed youngster who made her way to rescue after her 7 days. She was a real cutie pie, friendly, kissy and cuddly. She was a little skinny but appeared initially to be in OK health. Sadly Jody became very ill not long after arriving at rescue and the poor mite tried to fight it with the best vet care, but tragically she was just too young and weak and lost her battle. We would like to say thank you to everyone who helped Jody.. sleep tight.

SKIP Died August 2009
Skip was one of our regulars whose owners never came for him the last time.. so he was kindly offered a rescue place with a loving foster home. Skip had several health checks and tests and intially got the all clear. He went on to prove himself to be a real character and won the hearts of everyone. Skip suddenly developed a rapidly growing lump that his vet wanted to remove and test. Sadly Skip did not make it after the operation. We would like to thank the rescue, fosterers, vets and transporters who worked to give this lovely older chap happiness in his last months. For Skip's thread on our forum please click here.

Poor Kane unexpectedly and suddenly became ill with a gastro problem whilst waiting for his home and was rushed to the vets where he recieved round the clock care to save him - but tragically Kane lost his fight. PRINCE Died November 2009
Prince was a handsome staffie lad who came into the pound. He was believed to have a few behaviour issues, but with our policy to give a dog a chance he came into our emergency boarding care, where he soon proved himself to be a gorgeous and friendly lad without the issues initially suspected. Whilst under the care of the lovely girls at boarding, he developed an upset tummy and was taken to the vets where nothing untoward was discovered. Tragically the next morning Prince was found to have passed on, curled in his basket. Poor Prince's luck was on the turn when he was so suddenly and sadly taken. Thank you to those who gave him his chance, got him to safety and showed him the love he deserved when there. For Prince's thread on our forum please click here.

Johnny came into the pound absolutely terrified. He was so scared and overwhelmed he just hid in the corner of his kennel. We managed to get him to our boarding kennels where Johnny start to come around once the kennel staff were able to show him love and that his life would be full of love and kindness from now on. Johnny shortly after got a rescue space and continued to come on as his confidence built. Tragically poor Johnny had an adverse reaction to his vaccination and became ill and passed away. A big thank you to everyone who gave Johnny his chance and showed him that people are not all bad. For Johnny's thread on our forum please click here.

JUSTIN Died December 2009
Justin came into our Emergency Boarding care after serving his 7 days as another unwanted stray at the pound. He was only with us a short while but we quickly learnt he was a lovely boy. Sadly Justin became ill whilst in our care and rapidly went downhill and the hard decision was made to let him free of his suffering. We are thankful that Justin was able to spend the weekend before out and about with our lovely dog walkers and was able to know he was cared for. For Justin's thread on our forum please click here.

CHUNK Died December 2009
Chunk was signed over into our care as his owners were unable to keep him. It soon became apparent that something was not quite right with Chunk and a trip to the vets confirmed that it was thought he had a brain lesion. Chunk however was quite happy and enjoying life. Chunk stayed in our care until a special rescue place came along. Chunk moved to rescue a few months ago where they loved him and gave him the best of care until a special home could be found for him. Sadly Chunk's temprament started to change as a result of his neurological condition and the decision was made to let him go with dignity. We thank everyone who helped Chunk including our transporters, dog walkers and the rescue who also gave him a chance. For Chunks's thread on our forum please click here.

QUATO Died December 2009
Quato was an older Akita boy, who came into the pound as a stray - having been abandoned when he should have been by a fire keeping warm and cosy. Quato had something wrong with his legs which he wouldn't bend but he started undertaking treatment for severe arthritis and things would have been looking up for him as we had a special appeal to get him into a foster home. Tragically before gentle 'Grandad' Quato's home came up we lost him to bloat. At least he knew love and relief from his painful legs in his short time with us. For Quato's thread on our forum please click here.

PAL Died January 2010
Pal was a sweet crossbreed lad who came into the pound and was lucky enough to get rescue space after his 7 days. We thought such a nice dog would not have any problems finding a new home - but sadly shortly after arriving at rescue Pal became ill. The vets did all they could for him but Pal sadly lost his fight. Sleep tight Pal and thank you to his rescue for looking after him. For Pal's thread on our forum please click here.

HESKEY Died March 2010
Heskey was a lovely natured Rottweiler lad who was taken to the pound after sitting outside his owners house for a week after being thrown out. He soon was offered a rescue space and being such a good natured boy with everything soon had the offer of a home. Tragically before he could move to his new life Heskey suddenly and unexpectedly passed away. We believe he may have had an underlying medical condition - perhaps why he was abandoned. Thank you to everyone who helped Heskey at boarding and his rescue for taking care of him. For Heskey's thread on our forum please click here.

TOBY Died May 2010
Toby was a little Jack Russell who moved to rescue after serving his 7 days. Toby had started to become stressed in kennels whilst waiting for his forever home and every effort was made to find him somewhere of his own. During his time at rescue he suffered from intermittent bouts of sickness and upset tummies. He became quite poorly during one incident and was rushed to the vets to go onto a drip where he later passed away. It was later found he had digested part of a toy which in time rotted and ended up giving him septicaemia. We are sorry Toby you never found the home you deserved and we also thank the rescue for doing everything they could for him. For Toby's thread on our forum please click here.

DANIEL Died May 2010
Toby was an older crossbreed dog who came into the pound and then moved onto rescue. MALIK Died July 2010
Malik was a Shepherd boy who came into the pound in a very poor condition - we knew that he needed medication for a condition but it was not known what! It was touch and go and he was a very poorly boy. Once at our kennels it was discovered he had a huge maggot infested wound for which he recieved immediate vets treatment. Sadly once under the anaesthetic it was discovered the extent of this and other wounds were just too much for his body to cope with. The vets advised it would be kindest to let Malik go whilst he was asleep. For Malik's thread on our forum please click here.

DOUGLAS Died August 2010
Douglas was an elderly Boxer gentleman found straying. The lovely Boxer rescue we work with had offered him a space if not reclaimed. Douglas spent his 7 days at the pound sleeping and probably wondering how he had ended up where he was at his age. He was all set to move to his new life the next day - Douglas never made it sadly - he got back into his bed after tea and passed away in the company of the Pound staff so he was not alone. For Douglas's thread on our forum please click here.

LUCA Died December 2010
Luca was a young lad (7 months old) brought into our care by his owners who were unable to keep him. Luca had been living outside and was ready to quickly find his rescue space and loving new home. Once in the kennels his health started to deteriorate and he was rushed to the vets who diagnosed spinal disc problems. Poor Luca became more distressed and in pain even with medication and the vets advised it would be kindest to let him go and be free from his pain. For Luca's thread on our forum please click here.

BENNY Died May 2011
Benny served his 7 days at the pound before moving onto rescue. Once there he started to show some aggressive tendencies when undergoing assessment. The rescue did all that they could to help him but the vets considered he had a neurological issue that was making him behave as he did. The vets and rescue agreed it would be kinder to let her be at peace - we thank them for looking after him and trying to help this poorly lad. For Benny's thread on our forum please click here.

DELILAH Died June 2011
Delilah was another youngster who found herself at the pound and was soon on her way to rescue. Under assessment it was discovered she potentially had a neurological syndrome which caused her to behave erratically and aggressively without her realising. Sadly she got worse and it was too much for such a small young pup to cope with. The vets and rescue agreed it would be kinder to let her be at peace - we thank them for looking after her. For Delilah's thread on our forum please click here.

ETHEL Died Sept 2011
Ethel was an elderly Yorkshire Terrier who found herself on the streets. She ended up at the pound and was due to be put to sleep. She was offered a rescue space and went to stay with one of our volunteers until she could be moved. Although very old she proved to be a sprightly girl with a lovely personality who quickly settled into home life. She did have some health issues but was doing OK and we were hoping she could find a home to live out her days. Sadly after moving to rescue her health deteriorated and the vets felt it kindest to let her go. We are all pleased she had a happy last few weeks and thank Katie for looking after her and the rescue for taking her in. For Ethels's thread on our forum please click here.

WILLOW Died Oct 2011
Willow was an elderly German Shepherd Akita cross who found herself at the pound. As one of the longest stayers was due to be put to sleep when we were able to step in to offer her a place with us. She was moved to our overflow kennels for a couple of days to ensure her safety; then she was picked up and transported to our boarding kennels in the next step of her new life. Sadly upon arrival she collapsed and was rushed to the vets where she sadly passed away. Poor Willow had a tumour on her spleen that had burst and sadly there was nothing the vets could do. We are so sorry she never made it to a new home but glad that at least Willow had a name for her last few days and the vets assured us she was given lots of love and cuddles with them. For Willows's thread on our forum please click here.

BILLY Died Nov 2011
Billy was lovely chunky big soft lad who came into our care after no one came for him at the pound. We had some concerns about his health after being advised he had been suffering with prostate troubles some 18 months ago. Before we could arrange for him to see our vets for a once over he was found collapsed in his kennel just the morning after arrival. The poor lad was rushed to the vets where he rapidly went down hill. Poor Billy had a tumour on his head, a suspected strangulated gut and a grade 6 heart mumur making it dangerous to give him an anaesthetic ... poor Billy went into heart failure and the decision was made to let him go and end his suffering with dignity. We would like to thank everyone who took care of Billy and tried to help him this morning when those that should have done turned him out on the street. For Billy's thread on our forum please click here.

PENNY Died Dec 2011
Penny was a sweet older JRT who came to us with oldie Ethel (see above) We did not think they knew eachother before but were two sweet girls who didn't deserve to end their days at the Stray Dog Kennels so we brought them into our care. Penny got offered a rescue space where she soon became the office dog so she could get lots of fuss and attention and hopefully find that loving forever home to live out her days. Sadly that home did not come along in time and Penny's health sadly deteriorated and the decision was made to let her go and join her friend Ethel. Thank you to everyone who helped ensure Penny was taken care of. For Penny's thread on our forum please click here.
